We work in partnership to ensure the physical, psychological, social, recreational development and spiritual needs of each child are met. Our team collaborates and consults with medical experts from Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, the State University of New York at Buffalo, Western New York District School Systems and other community resources to meet the personal needs of each child.
The Unit

Our mission is to provide a supportive, secure and stable environment that promotes human dignity, individual growth, development and self esteem in each child. Our goal is to provide ongoing care for children who no longer need acute hospital care, as well as to actively enable young residents to live in the least restrictive environment possible.

Welcome to our home.
As part of the Kaleida Health care community, the Long-Term Pediatric Unit at HighPointe on Michigan, provides comprehensive health services to medically fragile, technology dependent, and developmentally disabled children. We provide some highly specialized services not found anywhere else in our region.

We are the only Long Term Care Pediatric Unit east of the Mississippi River with staff experienced in caring for ventilator-dependent children who are admitted from acute care facilities or home.

We care for more than 20 pediatric residents who face a variety of challenges -- tracheotomy patients, children with birth defects, paraplegics, and others.

Our children range from infancy to 21 years of age and are cared for by compassionate, specially trained health professionals who are skilled at using the latest technology and treatments. Our unit is their home. They live here year round. Some attend school from here.

A team approach to total care.

Focused on quality of life.
Great effort goes into making sure that the quality of life for each resident of the Pediatric Unit is the best that it can be. The children are actively involved in individually developed Activities Programs. They have scheduled outings to a variety of places and events including:
• Fantasy Island
• Erie County Fair
• movies
• Buffalo Zoo
• Bisons baseball games
• lunches at the mall, park and marina to name just a few.

They also have scheduled parties for holidays, birthdays, and other events on the Unit as well as entertainers who frequently perform. Arts and Crafts, music, exercise programs are also a regular part of their life at HighPointe.

A family friendly environment.
Family members provide support and encouragement that our young residents need during treatment to excel in day to day tasks. We encourage families to actively participate in their child care and provide them with the following support services:
• hospitality services for families coming from considerable distances
• interfaith spiritual support
• access to medical libraries
• assistance with applying for medical benefits.
